Boring eh! All of that brainpower and the very best that they could come up with was “Canada Day”. If it had been a contest, a 4 year old from Nunavut could have come up with that name. Or would that have been a 4 year old from Frobisher Bay? Sometimes I get my politically correct, non offensive, nationally inclusive, gender neutral, lily livered speech wrong.
Here in Sweetwater, the Geek made a big mistake of using his out loud voice in the presence of Mrs. Geek, to express admiration for some folks who really know how to name an event to make it catchy, descriptive and damn near irresistible. The good folks up at the county of Wellington North, a little west of Orangeville, have come up with a reason to visit their area over this holiday weekend, no matter what they call it in the rest of the country. In Wellington North, they invite you to join them in exploring The Butter Tart Trail. http://www.wellington-north.com/index.php
They are running events all this weekend at locations all over the county running from south/north from Arthur to Mount Forest. Imagine that, travel from Bakery to cafe, to Llama farm, to community BBQ, munching on Butter Tarts and rubbing elbows with more Arlens, Elgins, and Walters, Margaret’s, Beatrice’s and Evelyn’s then you can shake a stick at. Sounds like a hoot to me. Something I would rather do on a Wednesday or some other such day that doesn’t include hundreds of city folk out on the hunt for “Organic” butter tarts that are made with locally grown ingredients that came into this world in an environmentally responsible manner and with a firm eye on the sustainability of the biosphere. I could do without that.
It is enough for Mrs. Geek and I to pass by what I assume used to be a good old butcher shop on the highway just east of Meaford. They have a sign which prominently displays that they sell “ORGANIC MEAT” ! This never fails to crack me up and Mrs. Geek always waits patiently for me to ask the question, “Is there such a thing as INorganic meat”? and “Who would eat INorganic meat?
This leads to an observation that you should never underestimate the human capacity for self delusion. Advertising folks know this of course, which is why this butcher has become a “Purveyor of Organic Meats”, much like my old barber became a “Hair Stylist” a couple of decades and fashion trends ago.
As clever marketing campaigns go however. I am going to give top marks to those great folks in Wellington North. They really know how to put across an idea. Imagine elevating the Butter Tart to having it’s own weekend. Eat your heart out Toronto with your Jazz Festival and your toll roads and your $18 an hour parking. This is the Ontario I love, these are the kinds of things that make Sweetwater and it’s neighbouring communities just wonderful places to work, play and live.
I also love their visual aids (shown below) as well. I know where we will be spending some time this Dominion Day, and I am really looking forward to it.
